The yellowtail blenny, scientific name Escenius Namiyei, is a peaceful fish. Their minimum tank size is 30 gallons. Yellowtail blennies can grow up to 4” and can live up to 8 years. Yellowtail blennies are herbivores and will eat algae found on the glass, rocks and other parts of the tank. If no algae is present in the tank they should be supplemented with algae sheets or pellets. Yellowtail blennies should be kept in singles but can be kept with other blennies that are different in appearance. Blennies that are similar size and shape will normally fight because of food security, housing spaces or territorial issues. Yellowtail blennies are reef safe and will not bother coral or invertebrates. Yellowtail blennies prefer to sleep in cracks and holes found in the rocks and can be seen sitting on the rocks or swimming from rock to rock during the day. The yellowtail blenny is also called the flametail blenny, yellowtail black blenny, and the black comb tooth blenny.
