Red Cyanobacteria… Never Again!

Red Velvet makes great cakes, but is not attractive spread across your reef aquarium. Red cyanobacteria is a result of 2 factors…

  • Nutrient levels like Nitrate and Phosphate that are high enough to support it (not hard to do)
  • A lack of circulation to some or all areas of the tank

So to combat cyano try to increase the frequency of nutrient exporting, and purchase another circulation pump. If you think about how much the ocean moves on a daily basis your tank is probably not turbulent in comparison.

Chemical remedies such as chemiclean do work and can be effective in reducing an active bacterial bloom. However if you don’t address the source of the problem, after the chemical treatment is over the bacteria can re-appear.

To introduce chemicals to pets to solve a mechanical problem is both expensive and ineffective. The solution is to increase water movement and clean more often.
