The Toadstool is a pink and green type of leather coral. It is often referred to as the “Mushroom Leather Coral” or the “Umbrella Coral”, its scientific name is Sarcophyton Glaucum. Toadstool’s are part of the soft coral category and are considered easy for beginners. They will benefit from but do not require feedings from coral food (reef roids), brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. One of the desirable benefits of toadstools is their peacefulness, they do not have any type of sting or sweeper polyps. The best placement for the toadstool would be somewhere on the lower to middle section of the tank. A moderate to high light setting with a low to moderate water flow setting will create the best suited environment for this coral.

Once in a while when debris or detritus has landed onto the toadstool it will begin to shed its polyps. This can be frightening if never seen before and can sometimes take up to a week to complete. During this time the toadstool should be left alone. Certain species after shedding their polyps will have a membrane with a wax like appearance that will eventually shed away as well, this is when the new polyps will grow back. This is a healthy sign of the toadstool preventing itself from getting sick. They do however have so many chemicals inside of them that they can create an undesirable water chemistry for proper growth of certain SPS coral when the membrane is shed and released into the water column.
