Money Cowry snails are a friendly and delicate type of snail often seen in the aquarium trade. Their scientific name is Cyprea Moneta but they are often referred to as the ringed money cowry, ring cowry or money cowry. Money Cowrys are from the Cypraeidae family. Their maximum size is 1 3/4” and they can live up to 3 years. These snails are strictly herbivores. Their minimum tank size is 5 gallons. Money Cowry’s are extremely peaceful and are coral and invertebrate safe, and will often be seen on the glass or on the rocks.
Money Cowrys have a mantle that will stretch from the base of their shell, reaching to meet in the middle at the top of their shell. This mantle has papillae on it that will be seen during ideal conditions. Not seeing this mantle ever is a sign that the Money Cowry is not getting optimal conditions. When frightened or disturbed their mantle will retract to underneath their shell, but it should return once the disturbance has gone away. These snails should be flipped if seen upside down.
