The masked crab is a delicate and rare species that is not often seen in the aquarium hobby. Its scientific name is Corystes Cassivelaunusis but it is referred to as the masked crab, the helmet crab or the sand crab. This crab belongs to the Corystidae family. Their maximum size is 1.2” wide in body length and they can live up to 3 years. Masked crabs are omnivores that will bury themselves and eat microorganisms found in the sand. Due to their small size these crabs have a minimum tank size of 5 gallons. It is recommended to have a mature tank, with at least a 1” sand bed for them to bury themselves. Masked crabs are peaceful and are both coral and invertebrate safe. Masked crabs will often be seen buried under the sand, but can sometimes be seen walking alone the sand bed, they use their two antennae to form a breathing tube that allows for oxygenated water to go down into the substate. Males will have much longer antennae than females, female’s antennae will match the size of the crab’s carapace.
