Horseshoe crabs are one of the rarer species not often seen in the hobby. Its scientific name is Limulus Polyphemus but they are often referred to as the horseshoe crab. Horseshoe crabs come from the Limulidae family. Horseshoe crabs can reach a maximum of 2’ but that is size is not ever seen in aquariums, 1 – 3” body size is more common, and they grow slowly. They can live up to 20 years. Horseshoe crabs have a minimum tank size of 20 gallons. These crabs are omnivores that will scavenge leftovers from the tank. Horseshoe crabs are considered peaceful and are both coral and invertebrate safe. Horseshoe crabs are not the best swimmers and can be quite clumsy so having them in a tank with lower flow settings is ideal, keeping rocks and décor to a minimum.
