The collector urchin is a common species, its scientific name is Tripneustes Gratilla but it is almost always called the collector urchin. It is also sometimes referred to as the Halloween urchin. This urchin comes from the Toxopneustidae family. Collector urchins can grow up to a maximum size of 6” in diameter and can live up to 200 years in ideal conditions! Collector urchins are herbivores omnivores that prefer to eat coralline algae and other types of algae. If there is not enough algae in the tank they can be supplemented with algae rocks. These urchins have a minimum tank size of 40 gallons. Collector urchins are peaceful and are both coral and invertebrate safe, small frags should be glued down properly so they do not get picked up by the urchin. Collector urchins prefer to stay on the rocks and are nocturnal, giving them algae rocks in the evening would be more effective.
