The ocean offers so many unique animals. The specific needs of photosynthetic animals like corals can not be met by cheap lighting. In some areas of life, you really do have to spend to succeed. Reef lighting is one of those spending required areas. Top of industry lighting can be up to $1000(CAD) each. Aqua Illuminations, Ecotech, and Kessel are leaders in the market and can make a world of difference in your coral growing success.
Fish and invertebrates on the other hand do not require strong lighting for survival. They may appreciate more lighting but do not need it for development and longevity. If you are sticking to a small budget, a fish/invertebrate only tank can still satisfy and offer excitement from living art.
